Formation of the Gray Sharks

The Gray Sharks were formed in 2007 by Kenneth Cohen and Ellen Tobler, both members of the Leaning Tower YMCA.

Kenneth Cohen started swimming for exercise at the age of 40 when his doctors told him that, one-by-one, he had to give up all his sports activities due to numerous injuries. Swimming was the one sport he did not care for, but was the only one left that he could do. Ken took swimming seriously, as he needed the cardiovascular work, and quickly worked up to swimming 2,000-2,500 meters five times a week.

Ken, along with Ellen Tobler, organized the Gray Sharks at the Leaning Tower YMCA and is proud that, to this day, the Gray Sharks are a very active and growing team.

Ken enjoys competition and in 2006 he set an Illinois state record in his age group for the 1500 short course meter freestyle. His one desire is to practice with his team in the mornings, but cannot as he is a lifeguard and opens the pool at 5:30 am so that his team can practice.

Ken retired from his career in 2002. He is married to Andrea, has two children, two stepchildren, and six grandchildren. Life is beautiful!
